COMMEMORATIVE CELEBRATION – 14 APRIL 1942: THE FIRST STRIKE IN EUROPE UNDER GERMAN RULE
74 years after the great strike of April 14th 1942, the Hellenic Post honored, like every year, the “Triatatikoi” fighters, whose brave resistance against fascism set an example to the enslaved nations of Europe and gave them hope.

April 14th 1942 was the date of the first major strike in Europe which was under German rule. The “Triatatikoi” strikers were in the streets for seven days and seven nights, defying death and achieving a great victory, the victory of freedom, which “will be remembered in the years to come...”.

The celebration took place on Thursday 14 April at Kotzia square, in front of the central Post Office, which was the starting point of the strike.

“TALES FROM THE POST” - A BOOK ON THE POST OFFICE AND ITS PEOPLE
A presentation of the book “Tales from the Post” took place on Tuesday 23 December 2014, at the central Post Office of Athens. The event was widely attended and exceptionally successful.

The book is a collection of short stories written by 15 of the best contemporary Greek authors:

Costas Akrivos, Maro Vamvounaki, Vassilis Vassilikos, Manos Kontoleon, Thomas Korovinis, Auguste Corteau, Amanda Michalopoulou, Thodoris Papatheodorou, Eleni Priovolou, George Skambardonis, Maria Skiadaresi, Thanassis Skroubelos and Christos Chomenidis.

The book was published by the Hellenic Post and it includes an introduction by Stefanos Dandalos.

The common source of inspiration for the above great litterateurs was the Postman and the letters distributed by the Post Office professionals throughout hundreds of years, as postal services never ceased being used by people as a means of communication, despite the significant technological advances of modern times.

RESOLUTION FOR SUPPORT TO THE LAID OFF CLEANERS OF THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE

RESOLUTION FOR SUPPORT TO THE LAID OFF CLEANERS OF THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE
The Pan-Hellenic Federation of Postal Unions (POST, in Greek: ΠΟΣΤ) and all the Hellenic Post employees express our solidarity and undivided support to the struggle of the 39 cleaners who worked for the Ministry of Finance, who were laid off on September 18th 2013 and have been protesting ever since.

We are by their side, supporting their fight for their human rights to life and dignity, for their fundamental right to work; we remain by their side and against policies which result in impoverishment.

We demand application of the ruling of the Athens Court of First Instance, which ruled that the suspension of the cleaners was against the law and ordered that they return to their working duties, according to the following ratio decidendi:

“under no circumstances are radical interventions in the citizens' lives justified, as such actions lead to the impoverishment of a large number of families, bearing the evident danger of the deconstruction of society”.

CELEBRATION IN MEMORY OF THE FIRST GENERAL STRIKE IN OCCUPIED EUROPE ON APRIL 14th 1942
The Hellenic Post honors the first General Strike in Europe under German rule, which was initiated by the Greek post office employees on April 14th 1942.

In occupied Athens, plagued by famine, disease and death, the employees of the Central Post Office dared to defy the death penalty, which was the punishment imposed on strikers, and decided to go on strike.

“Even enslaved people can fight; and be victorious... after seven days and seven nights in the streets. A victory which will remain memorable in the years to come”.
